Empowering Women, Transforming Communities: A Success Story from the SHOYE Project

In the heart of Dhanshirini village, Ulipur, Bangladesh, a story of resilience, empowerment, and transformation unfolds—the story of Nurima. Her journey epitomizes the remarkable power of determination and the life-changing impact of targeted community interventions.

Born into a life of financial hardship, Nurima faced significant challenges from a young age. Her father, a banana seller, struggled to provide for the family, and Nurima’s education was cut short after the fifth grade. At just 13 years old, she was married off due to her family’s financial constraints, entering a life fraught with difficulties.

A Turning Point: Support from the SHOYE Project

Nurima’s life began to change when she became involved in the Strengthening Household Opportunity through Youth Engagement (SHOYE) project, implemented by Mahideb Jubo Somaj Kallayan Somity (MJSKS) with support from the Kadoorie Charitable Foundation. This transformative initiative provided her with targeted training and financial assistance, enabling her to pursue vegetable farming and goat rearing—two income-generating activities that became the foundation for her journey toward independence.

With the project’s support, Nurima gained the skills, resources, and confidence to take charge of her life. She used her earnings to buy land, build a home, and create a stable foundation for her family. Today, her efforts have not only improved her family’s financial stability but also earned her recognition and respect within her community.

Economic Independence and Social Empowerment

Nurima’s success is a testament to the profound impact that economic empowerment can have on women’s lives. Her monthly contributions of BDT 4,000 to her household have helped alleviate financial pressures and foster a sense of shared responsibility. Moreover, her achievements inspired her husband to actively participate in improving their family’s livelihood, creating a partnership rooted in mutual respect and shared goals.

Nurima’s story highlights the SHOYE project’s holistic approach to empowerment. By providing both technical skills and financial support, the initiative has enabled women like Nurima to achieve self-reliance and play an active role in their families and communities.

A Vision for the Future

As a mother and role model, Nurima dreams of a brighter future—not only for her three children but for every woman in her village. Her two older children are now pursuing their education, and she envisions a day when every woman in her community can enjoy the same freedom, respect, and equality that she has worked so hard to achieve.

Today, Nurima’s assets include goats, ducks, chickens, and land where she grows vegetables to sustain her family. She also maintains a savings account with the youth group, underscoring her commitment to securing her family’s future.

The Broader Impact of the SHOYE Project

Nurima’s story is just one of many inspiring examples of the transformative impact of the SHOYE project. By addressing the unique challenges faced by women in marginalized communities, the project empowers individuals to break free from cycles of poverty and dependence. Its success lies in its multifaceted approach, combining skill development, financial assistance, and community engagement to create lasting change.

As Nurima’s journey illustrates, empowerment goes beyond financial independence. It fosters confidence, resilience, and a sense of agency, enabling women to become leaders in their families and communities.
