The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted lives globally, leaving a profound impact on health behaviors. ART Lab is proud to share insights from a pivotal study that investigates how prolonged lockdowns influenced smoking habits among private university students in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This research sheds light on the interplay between stress, lifestyle changes, and social isolation during the pandemic and their role in shaping tobacco use patterns.
Key Highlights of the Study:
Conducted as a cross-sectional survey, this study involved 572 participants and delved into various socioeconomic and behavioral factors. Among the respondents, 31.9% of smokers reported an increase in tobacco consumption during the lockdown period.
The findings reveal significant contributors to this increase:
- Heightened Stress Levels: The stress of isolation, academic uncertainties, and financial hardships during lockdowns led many students to turn to smoking as a coping mechanism.
- Increased Caffeine Intake: A marked rise in caffeine consumption among participants was closely linked to higher tobacco use.
- Social Isolation: Limited interaction with friends and family exacerbated stress, pushing individuals toward smoking.
- Access Challenges: Difficulty procuring cigarettes during lockdown periods also played a role, leading to withdrawal symptoms and subsequent increased consumption.
Why This Research Matters:
Smoking is a leading cause of preventable deaths and poses severe health risks, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The findings from this study emphasize the urgent need for public health initiatives aimed at addressing stress-induced behaviors during crises. Programs promoting stress management techniques such as meditation, exercise, and counseling could significantly reduce tobacco dependency.
